Fumagillin is used as an antimicrobial agent from Aspergillus fumigatus. It is a specific inhibitor of methionine aminopeptidase-2 (MetAP-2) by covalently binding histidine residue of it. It is reported that this fungal metabolite suppresses angiogenesis and proliferation of endothelial cells.
It is a potent treatment of intestinal microsporidiosis in immunocompromised patients. It is reported that a derivative of fumagillin, AGM-1470, is related to angioinhibitory action by suppressing of mRNA expression of specific members of CDKs and cyclins and activation of CDC2 and CDK2 kinases in endothelial cells.
