Adiponectin, also known as Acpr30 and GPB-28, is a physiologically active protein which is specifically and highly expressed from adipose cells. Adipose tissue-expressed levels of adiponectin are inversely related to the degree of obesity and are correlated with insulin resistance states such as those found in obesity and type II diabetes mellitus. Adiponectin increases insulin sensitivity and decreases plasma glucose by increasing fat oxidation.
