General description
Vero cells are anchorage-dependent cells and have wide applications in molecular and cell biology research.[1] Vero cells have a pseudo-diploid karyotype[2] and are preferred cell lines for the propagation of various viruses, including poliovirus, rotavirus influenza and rabies virus.[3] These cells are useful hosts for vaccine production.[2]
Cell Line Origin
Monkey African Green kidney
Cell Line Description
Established from the kidney of a normal adult African Green monkey. Susceptible to a wide range of viruses including polio, rubella, arboviruses and reoviruses.
Application
VERO cell lines have been used:
- in the propagation of Chandipura virus (CHPV)[4]
- in the cytotoxicity assay to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-viral activities of Capsicum annuum methanolic extracts[5]
- for the propagation of T.cruzi[6]
Virus studies: polio, rubella, arboviruses and reoviruses
Culture Medium
(D6546) + 2 mM (G7513) + 10% (F2442).
Subculture Routine
Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:3 to 1:6 i.e. seeding at 1-3x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.25% trypsin or trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 37 °C.
