Protein Kinase R (PKR), also known as EIF2AK2, is a serine/threonine kinase activated by double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) during viral infections. Upon activation, PKR phosphorylates eIF2α, leading to translational arrest and inhibition of viral replication. Beyond its antiviral role, PKR acts as a sensor of cellular stress and integrates signals from interferons, cytokines, and oxidative stress.
