Phosphatase and tensin homolog, also known as PTEN, is a 402 AA protein that is expressed throughout the body. PTEN primarily functions by dephosphorylating phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-triphosphate, which inhibits the AKT signaling pathway, and is essential for cell survival. It was discovered via this interaction that PTEN is essential for the inhibition of tumors. PTEN expression is frequently absent or drastically decreased in malignancies of the breast, ovary, endometrial, prostate, and lung.
