The oncogenic protein BCL-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) is known for its role in preventing apoptosis. It is a 24-26 kDa protein that is found in the nuclear envelope, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondrial membrane. BCL-2 is categorized as a proto-oncogene since it is thought to be a significant antiapoptotic protein.
