Protein c-Fos is encoded by the FOS gene, a proto-oncogene that is the human homolog of the retroviral oncogene v-fos. The Activator Protein-1 (AP-1) complex is formed when c-Fos and c-Jun form a heterodimer. This complex binds DNA at specific AP-1 sites in the promoter and enhancer regions of target genes, converting extracellular signals into changes in gene expression. Additionally, posttranslational alterations brought on by phosphorylation by various kinases, such as MAPK, CDC2, PKA, or PKC, regulate its activity.
