Electron Microscopy Sciences Lanthanum hexaboride is the optimum cathode material for use in sem, tem, x-ray microanalysis, and electron beam lithography and is a direct replacement for tungsten filaments. It features low potential barrier (work function), high melting point and stability at high temperatures, a low vapor pressure that reduces evaporation lost, and chemical stability. The lab6 beam is ten times brighter than tungsten, has superior resolution and can be used in a wide range of accelerating voltages. It provides sharp and clear pictures even to the smallest details. Heat and vacuum are the determinants of cathode tips life, but at 1550 °c and 10-7 torr, a service life of about 500 hours can be achieved. - EMS
