| Alternate Names |
|
| Background Information | PRDM5 is a member of the PR-domain containing family of tumor suppressors. PRDM5 activates histone methyltransferase G9a and class I histone deacetylases to regulate transcription. PRDM5 typically functions as a transcriptional repressor but can also be an activator for endogenous target genes. PRDM5 has often been found to be silenced in human breast, ovarian and liver cancers and and is a candidate biomarker for certain cancers, such as gastrointestinal cancer. Additional studies have also linked the loss of PRDM5 function to the development and pathogenesis of cervical cancer. |

| Entrez Gene Number |
|
| Entrez Gene Summary | The protein encoded by this gene is a transcription factor of the PR-domain protein family. It contains a PR-domain and multiple zinc finger motifs. Transcription factors of the PR-domain family are known to be involved in cell differentiation and tumorigenesis. [provided by RefSeq]. |

| UniProt Summary | FUNCTION: Sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor. Represses transcription at least in part by recruitment of the histone methyltransferase EHMT2/G9A and histone deacetylases such as HDAC1. Regulates hematopoiesis-associated protein-coding and microRNA (miRNA) genes. SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Interacts with EHMT2/G9A, GFI1 and HDAC1. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Contains 16 C2H2-type zinc fingers. Contains 1 SET domain. |
| Molecular Weight | ~75 kDa observed. Three isoforms at 73, 70, and 13 kDa have been described. Uncharacterized bands between 13 and 73 kDa may be observed in some lysates. |
