General description
Iron(III) chloride is a mild oxidizing agent.[1] It is widely employed as a Lewis acid in organic synthesis.[2] On crystallization with water, it forms hydrates. It can be prepared by passing chlorine over scrap iron at approximately 650°C.[3]
