| Description | Anti-FGF-2/basic FGF Antibody, clone bFM-2 |
| Overview | This antibody can cross-react with native and heat-inactivated basic FGF but will not neutralize biological activity. Upstate recommends anti-FGF-2/basic FGF, neutralizing (Catalog #05-117) for neutralizing activity. |

| Background Information | FGF basic (FGF2) is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members bind heparin and possess broad mitogenic and angiogenic activities. FGF2 is involved in diverse biological processes, such as limb and nervous system development, wound healing, and tumor growth. FGF2 mRNA contains multiple polyadenylation sites, and is alternatively translated from AUG and non-AUG (CUG) initiation codons resulting in five different isoforms with distinct properties. The CUG-initiated isoforms are localized in the nucleus and are responsible for the intracrine effect, whereas, the AUG-initiated form is mostly cytosolic and is responsible for the paracrine and autocrine effects of this FGF. |

| Key Applications |
|
| Application Notes | Immunohistochemistry: Previous lots of this antibody have been shown to immunostain frozen brain sections fixed with ice-cold, ethanol:acetic acid [95:5]. This antibody has also been used at 10 μg/mL to stain paraffin-embedded sections (Matsuzaki, K., 1989). |

| Concentration | Please refer to the Certificate of Analysis for the lot-specific concentration. |
| Host | Mouse |
| Specificity | This antibody detects FGF-2/basic FGF. |
| Isotype | IgG1κ |
| Species Reactivity |
|
| Species Reactivity Note | This antibody is highly specific for basic FGF from bovine, human, rat, and mouse sources and does not cross-react with bovine acidic FGF (FGF-1, HBGF-1). Important Note: This antibody can cross-react with native and heat-inactivated basic FGF but will not neutralize biological activity (Uteza, Y., 1999). Upstate recommends anti-FGF-2/basic FGF, clone bFM-1 (neutralizing) (Catalog # 05-117) for neutralizing activity. |

| Entrez Gene Summary | The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members bind heparin and possess broad mitogenic and angiogenic activities. This protein has been implicated in diverse biological processes, such as limb and nervous system development, wound healing, and tumor growth. The mRNA for this gene contains multiple polyadenylation sites, and is alternatively translated from non-AUG (CUG) and AUG initiation codons, resulting in five different isoforms with distinct properties. The CUG-initiated isoforms are localized in the nucleus and are responsible for the intracrine effect, whereas, the AUG-initiated form is mostly cytosolic and is responsible for the paracrine and autocrine effects of this FGF. |

| UniProt Summary | FUNCTION: SwissProt: P09038 # The heparin-binding growth factors are angiogenic agents in vivo and are potent mitogens for a variety of cell types in vitro. There are differences in the tissue distribution and concentration of these 2 growth factors. SIZE: 155 amino acids; 17254 Da SUBUNIT: Monomer. Interacts with CSPG4 and FGFBP1. Found in a complex with FGFBP1, FGF1 and FGF2. SIMILARITY: SwissProt: P09038 ## Belongs to the heparin-binding growth factors family. MISCELLANEOUS: This protein binds heparin more strongly than does aFGF. |
