| Background Information | Krueppel-like factor 2 (Klf2) is a novel protein belonging to the KLF family of transcription factors, a subfamily of approximately 20 members characterized by their possession of a zinc-finger domain and functioning as transcriptional regulators for cellular differentiation and growth. Klf2 activates transcription through its binding of the beta-globin gene promoter CACCC box. Studies have shown Klf2 to have critical roles in both the function and differentiation of several cell types including; adipocytes, lung cells, T lymphocytes, and monocytes. It has also been newly identified as an endothelial transcription regulator for pro-inflammatory activation, and is a requirement for the migration of smooth muscle cells and normal vessel formation. Shear stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines are considered to be potent inhibitors of Klf2. Expression is primarily observed in lung and spleen tissue, but it has also been found in aortic tissue. |

| UniProt Summary | FUNCTION: Binds to the CACCC box in the beta-globin gene promoter and activates transcription. SUBUNIT STRUCTURE: Interacts with WWP1 (By similarity). SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Nucleus (By similarity). TISSUE SPECIFICTY: Predominant expression in the lungs and spleen. PTM: Ubiquitinated. Polyubiquitination involves WWP1 and leads to proteasomal degradation of this protein. SEQUENCE SIMILARITIES: Belongs to the krueppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family. Contains 3 C2H2-type zinc fingers. |
