| Description | Anti-ADAM 9 Antibody, disintegrin domain |

| Background Information | A disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain-containing protein 9 (ADAM 9) belongs to a family of transmembrane, membrane-anchored, disintegrin-containing proteins that are involved in several biological functions such as protein ectodomain shedding, cell fusion, and cell adhesion. ADAMs contain several characteristic domains, two of which, the protease and disintegrin domains, are noted for their homology to snake venom metalloprotease. The exact function of ADAM 9 is yet unknown, however it is widely distributed, is found within keratinocytes, and is ideally placed on the cell membrane, which some studies have suggested supports a role in cell migration and motility. Alternative splicing results in two isoforms; isoform 1 is found within the cell membrane and is considered a single-pass type 1 membrane protein, while isoform 2 is secreted. Mutations in ADAM 9 expression are causal to cone-rod dystrophy type 9 or CORD9 which is characterized by visible retinal pigment deposits and loss of cone photoreceptors leading and rod degeneration, ultimately resulting in severe loss of vision. |

| Entrez Gene Number |
|
| Entrez Gene Summary | This gene encodes a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain) family. Members of this family are membrane-anchored proteins structurally related to snake venom disintegrins, and have been implicated in a variety of biological processes involving cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, including fertilization, muscle development, and neurogenesis. The protein encoded by this gene interacts with SH3 domain-containing proteins, binds mitotic arrest deficient 2 beta protein, and is also involved in TPA-induced ectodomain shedding of membrane-anchored heparin-binding EGF-like growth factor. Two alternative splice variants have been identified, encoding distinct isoforms. [provided by RefSeq]. |
