| Background Information | C->U-editing enzyme APOBEC-1 (UniProt: P41238; also known as EC:3.5.4.36, Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme 1, HEPR, mRNA(cytosine(6666)) deaminase 1) is encoded by the APOBEC1 gene (Gene ID: 339) in human. Apobec1 is a homodimeric protein that is expressed exclusively in mammalian intestines. It is the catalytic component of the apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme complex and serves as a zinc-dependent cytidine deaminase that converts a specific cytidine to uridine in apolipoprotein B (ApoB) mRNA transcripts. Hence, it is responsible for the post-transcriptional editing of a CAA codon for Gln to a UAA codon for stop in the APOB mRNA. Its CMP/dCMP-type deaminase domain is localized in amino acids 10-134. Overexpression of Apobec1 has been linked to hepatocellular carcinoma in mice and rabbits and its deficiency in cancer-prone mice is reported to reduce the number of polyps and tumors in the gastrointestinal tract.
