BRE1-A (E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase BRE1A) also known by its gene name hRNF20, plays a role in histone code and gene regulation as a component of the RNF20/40 E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase complex. That complex mediates monoubiquitination of Lys-120 of histone H2B,which is a specific tag for epigenetic transcriptional activation as well as a prerequisite for histone H3 Lys-4 (H3K4me) and Lys-79 (H3K79me) methylation.
