| Alternate Names |

| Background Information | Alternative-splicing factor 1 (ASF-1), also known as SRp30a or SF2, is a member of the highly conserved family of SR proteins, a group of serine/arginine-rich domain-containing proteins that play a critical role in regulated and constitutive splicing of precursor mRNA. The SR family of proteins is characterized as having one to two RNA recognition motifs located in the n-terminal sequence, and an RS domain within the C-terminus that is rich in serine/arginine dipeptide repeats. ASF-1 has an inhibitory role in exon skipping, in order to maintain splicing accuracy and to monitor alternative splicing. Studies have shown that ASF-1 plays a role in the regulation of caspase-9 alternative splicing as well as being a critical component for ceramide to function as a mediator of alternative splicing for the same caspase. |

| Key Applications |
|
| Application Notes | Immunohistochemistry Analysis: A 1:50 dilution from a representative lot detected ASF-1 (SF2) in human prostate carcinoma cells and human testis tissue. Western Blotting Analysis: A representative lot was used by an independent laboratory in western blotting (Sinha, R., et al. (2010). Mol. Cell. Biol. doi:10.1128/MCB.01270-09). Immunoprecipitation Analysis: A representative lot immunoprecipitated ASF-1 (SF2) in HeLa nuclear extracts (Jablonski, J. A., et al. (2010). Nucleic Acids Research. 38(4):1249-1260). |

| Entrez Gene Number |
|
| Entrez Gene Summary | This gene encodes a member of the arginine/serine-rich splicing factor protein family, and functions in both constitutive and alternative pre-mRNA splicing. The protein binds to pre-mRNA transcripts and components of the spliceosome, and can either activate or repress splicing depending on the location of the pre-mRNA binding site. The proteins ability to activate splicing is regulated by phosphorylation and interactions with other splicing factor associated proteins. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq]. |
