Miltenyi Biotec Clone REA438 recognizes the human B lymphoma Mo-MLV insertion region 1 homolog (BMI-1) antigen, which is also known as polycomb group RING finger protein 4 (PCGF4). BMI-1 is a member of the polycomb group of transcription repressors that was initially identified as an oncogene cooperating with c-myc in a murine model of lymphoma. Both, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and neuronal stem cells, express high levels of BMI-1. It has been shown that BMI-1 is necessary for efficient self-renewing cell divisions of adult HSCs as well as adult peripheral and central nervous system neural stem cells, but that it is less critical for the generation of differentiated progeny.
