Na+, K+-ATPase transports Na+ and K+ by coupling the hydrolysis of ATP to the transport of Na+ and K+. The movement of ions across the plasma membrane generates and maintains the electrochemical gradient required for osmoregulation, transport of molecules and nutrients.
