VSCCs are involved in a variety of calcium-dependent processes, including muscle contraction, hormone or neurotransmitter release, gene expression, cell motility, cell division, and cell death. Calcium channel, voltage-dependent, R type, alpha 1E subunit (CACNA1E) or Cav2.3 is encoded by the CACNA1E gene (1,2). In the brain, Cav2.3 has been implicated in synaptic plasticity (3,4). Interestingly, Cav2.3 may contribute to some neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s disease (5). |
