| Background Information | Histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 2C (UniProt: Q8BRH4; also known as EC: 2.1.1.43, Lysine-N-methyltransferase 2C, Myeloid-lineage leukemia protein 3 homolog, MLL-3) is encoded by the Kmt2c (also known as Mll3) gene in murine species. Mll3 gene is a member of the myeloid/lymphoid or mixed-lineage leukemia family. MLL-3 protein is a DHHC-type zinc finger protein with six PHD-type zinc fingers, a SET domain, a post-SET domain and a RING-type zinc finger. It methylates Lys-4 of histone H3. H3 Lys-4 methylation represents a specific tag for epigenetic transcriptional activation. MLL-3 is a central component of the MLL2/3 complex, a coactivator complex of nuclear receptors, involved in transcriptional co-activation. In adults, MLL-3 is detected in testis, kidney, spleen and lung and is weakly expressed in brain. It is absent in heart and liver tissue. MLL-3 has been reported to play a role in adipogenesis. |
