| Background Information | Laminin subunit alpha-5 (UniProt: O15230; also known as Laminin-10 subunit alpha, Laminin-11 subunit alpha, Laminin-15 subunit alpha) is encoded by the LAMA5 (also known as KIAA0533, KIAA1907) gene (Gene ID: 3911) in human. Laminins are a family of heterotrimeric extracellular glycoproteins consisting of alpha, beta, and gamma chains. Laminins mediate the attachment, migration and organization of cells into tissues during embryonic development by interacting with other extracellular matrix components. Thus far five alpha, three beta, and three gamma subunits are known, which assemble into at least 15 different laminin molecules. The alpha, beta, and gamma chains are bound to each other by disulfide bonds into a cross-shaped molecule comprising one long and three short arms with globules at each end. Alpha-5 is a subunit of laminin-10 (laminin-511), laminin-11 (laminin-521) and laminin-15 (laminin-523). It contains 22 laminin EGF-like domains, 5 5 laminin G-like domains, 1 laminin IV type A domain, and 1 laminin N-terminal domain. Laminin 5-alpha is expressed in heart, lung, kidney, muscle, pancreas, retina, and placenta. Very little or no expression is observed in brain and liver. |
