It is an important protein of the thin filament in cardiac sarcomeres, which play a crucial role in muscle contraction and support the pump function of the heart. It belongs to the actin family, highly conserved proteins that are involved in various types of cell motility and are ubiquitously expressed in eukaryotic cells. Mutations in ACTC1 lead to dilated cardiomyopathy.
