Glucogon is cleaved into 8 chains and plays a key role in glucose metabolism and homeostasis. Glucagon is stimulated by hypoglycemia and inhibited by hyperglycemia, insulin, and somatostatin. It raises plasma glucose levels in response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia and therfore is important in initiating and maintaining hyperglycemic conditions in diabetes.
