The Rhesus (RH) blood group system is the most clinically significant blood group system after ABO. At present, the RH blood group system consists of 50 defined blood-group antigens, among which the antigens D, C, and E are the most important. The classification of RH-positive and RH-negative individuals is determined by the presence or absence of the highly immunogenic CD240D (RhD) protein on the surface of erythrocytes.
