General description
Ethylene glycol (EG) is a polyol having a wide range of industrial applications. Its preparation from cellulose has been reported.[1] It can also be produced from fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas and coal) and biomass-derived resources.[2]

Ethylene glycol can be used as a reagent in cyclocondensation reactions with aldehydes and ketones to form 1,3-dioxolanes.[3][4]
