Takara X-Gal is a chromogenic substrate used to detect -galactosidase activity. In yeast, -galactosidase is a secreted reporter that is expressed from the MEL1 gene in response to GAL4 activation. -galactosidase accumulates in the media and hydrolyses X-Gal causing yeast colonies to turn blue.
